Transfer Window Verdict: Winners and Losers in the Scramble for Players

A hectic transfer window - albeit one in which little hard cash changed hands - ended on Monday.

Here FanHouse takes a look at how your EPL favourites fared in the window ...

ARSENAL

Sol Campbell's return may have pleased the romantics, but re-signing a 35-year-old who was deemed expendable three-and-a-half years previously hardly sent tremors of fear running through the Gunners' opponents. Arsene Wenger talked about signing a striker, then allowed his innate conservatism to take charge; the defeat to Manchester United suggests his caution was misplaced.
GRADE D

ASTON VILLA
Martin O'Neill's bid for a place at the top table collapsed last season after he failed to strengthen his squad. He obviously thinks no tweaking is needed this time but injuries to key players like Gabby Agbonlahor and Ashley Young would mean trouble.
GRADE C

BIRMINGHAM CITY
So the promised £40m from owner Carson Yeung didn't materialise, or Alex McLeish's valiant attempts to recruit a "trophy" signing. But we believe tampering too much with a squad that has overachieved so impressively would have been a risk so sensible shopping from Birmingham.
GRADE B+

BLACKBURN ROVERS
Manager Sam Allardyce has signed Algerian midfielder Amine Linganzi, 20, from French Club, St Etienne on a free transfer along with attacking midfielder Yildiray Basturk from Stuttgart on a six-month deal. Basturk could prove to be a shrewd piece of business, while supporters are also celebrating the departure of disruptive striker Benni McCarthy.
GRADE C

BOLTON WANDERERS
Only limited arrivals at the Reebok Stadium, with loan deals for Manchester City's Vladimir Weiss and Arsenal's Jack Wilshere the only incomings. Exciting talent but unproven, while not too much can be expected from Stuart Holden.
GRADE B –

BURNLEY
The signings made by manager Brian Laws smack of desperation, which is hardly surprising given the club's current plight. The arrivals of Frederic Nimani, Jack Cork, Nicky Weaver, Danny Fox and Leon Cort will hardly fill supporters with confidence. David Nugent has extended his loan deal from Portsmouth but it's doubtful he will keep them up.
GRADE E

CHELSEA
Chelsea never like doing their transfer deals in the January window and that has proved to be the same case this season. However, Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou's return from the African Cup of Nations is like gaining two additional players.
GRADE C-

EVERTON

Two in, one out at Goodison. But could David Moyes have pulled off a masterstroke by securing Landon Donovan? Not only did the USA international score in the 2-0 win over Sunderland, but Everton have climbed from 11th to 9th in the table since his arrival.
GRADE B

FULHAM
Fulham's loan capture of Nicky Shorey is an astute signing and will be welcomed by the club's supporters. The jury is out on the loan signing of Roma's Stefano Okaka and the permanent transfer of young German left-back Christopher Buchtmann.
GRADE C+

HULL CITY
Manager Phil Brown has been hamstrung by the club's financial difficulties, but keeping hold of Stephen Hunt despite a £5m offer from Wolves is a major boost and the equivalent of making a new signing. Daniel Cousin has been off-loaded to Greek side Larissa while Bryan Hughes has been paid up for the remaining six months of his contract. No incomings is a big concern though.
GRADE D

LIVERPOOL

Having been quick out of the blocks to secure Argentina international Maxi Rodriguez, it has been an awfully quiet window at Anfield with Rafa Benitez busy getting rid of deadwood like Andrea Dossena and Andriy Voronin. But does Benitez have enough quality in his squad to secure a Champions League berth?
GRADE D

MANCHESTER CITY
Hardly the spree we were expecting.Patrick Vieira has not made it onto the pitch yet and until then major question marks will remain. Adam Johnson is a good prospect but why have the richest club in the world not signed a central midfielder that they so obviously craved?
GRADE C+

MANCHESTER UNITED
Sir Alex Ferguson was never going to spend anything, apparently, but has splashed out on Chris Smalling who will arrive in the summer. Mame Biram Diouf has been awarded a work permit and looks a decent squad player.
GRADE B-

PORTSMOUTH
It could have been worse; much, much worse. As it turned out, the last month went about as well as could have been hoped for manager Avram Grant. The darkest fears were that Grant's prized assets would be sold to balance the books while a transfer embargo would halt newcomers. Fortunately the ban on new signings was lifted in time for Tottenham's Jamie O'Hara to come in on loan along with Spartak Moscow's Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, while Asmir Begovic's move to Stoke was offset by David James staying put. Tottenham-bound Younes Kaboul is a major loss though.
GRADE B+

STOKE
Chairman Peter Coates is one of the best in the Premier League and was prepared to spend big on targets including Kenwyne Jones, Scott Parker and Gary O'Neil - but even he baulked at the prices quoted. Tony Pulis's regard for Portsmouth won't be high after they messed him about for weeks regarding moves for goalkeepers David James and Asmir Begovic, until he finally landed the latter.
GRADE C+

SUNDERLAND
It was a case of what didn't happen at the Stadium of Light. Kenwyne Jones didn't go to Liverpool, Kieran Richardson stayed put and Robbie Keane. The signing of Benjani went through belatedly and Steve Bruce reinforced a defence in need of strengthening with Matthew Kilgallon, and a loan move for Alan Hutton. Bruce finally got rid of Daryl Murphy and David Healy, both on loan to Ipswich, while Nyron Nosworthy made a similar move to Sheffield United.
GRADE: C-

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
An ineffective window for Harry Redknapp. No goalkeeper cover, but a shrewd re-signing of Younes Kaboul to bolster his defence. Snaring Eidur Gudjohnsen on-loan to spite former club West Ham was a strange one.He managed to ship out some deadwood on loan - Robbie Keane set for Celtic, Alan Hutton to Sunderland and Giovani dos Santos to Galatasaray.
GRADE C

WEST HAM UNITED
Crucially kept all their aces in the pack. Matthew Upson, Scott Parker and Carlton Cole staying for their relegation fight. New owners tried desperately for a landmark signing in Ruud van Nistelrooy or Eidur Gudjohnsen – but landed Benni McCarthy and Mido instead.
GRADE B

WIGAN ATHLETICThe DW Stadium has been busier than Harrods on the opening day of the sales. Five in, including highly-rated Victor Moses and Bolivian striker Marcelo Moreno. Daniel de Ridder, Olivier Kappo and Cho Won-hee have hot-footed it to Israel, France and South Korea respectively.
GRADE B

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS
Not even a bid of £5m could persuade relegation rivals Hull to part with winger Stephen Hunt but Mick McCarthy will welcome back Michael Kightly and Andy Keogh from long-term injury shortly.
